Selective Empowerment Investments 1 (SEI 1) is an investment company, which was established to offer the small retail investor an opportunity to invest in JSE-listed shares without incurring large fees.


SEI 1 is also a vehicle that serves Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE), and we pride ourselves in meeting the aims of BBBEE by providing affordable access to Africa’s leading stock exchange.

Our shareholders encompass all aspects of the South African economy and society and we are therefore truly creating an investment vehicle for the people, by the people.

Established in 2007, we boast over 26 000 shareholders across all LSM groups, located throughout South Africa and select southern African countries.


Our primary investment objective is to provide our investors with relatively high long-term capital growth. We invest in listed and unlisted instruments (equity and debt), collective investment schemes and money market investments in order to maximise the return for our shareholders.

SERVICES

The SEI 1 Financial Services team focuses on investing in technology-driven innovation in financial infrastructure, products, services, and their distribution.


We aim to be a long-term partner to the financial services companies we support—with growth and expansion capital, sector knowledge, and our regional expertise and presence.

We invest in local and independent financial institutions. We believe the financial services sector is an important component of a well-diversified portfolio.

We are hands-on business partners, and work closely with management to help unlock opportunities and address their challenges.


Our mission is to invest in technologies to rapidly transform our food and agriculture system. farming practices must protect the long-term productivity of the land, but must also ensure profitable yields and the well-being of farmers and farm workers.

SEI 1 Agri was created to address this need by investing in innovative food and agriculture technology companies who are commercialising the necessary solutions and actively collaborating with strategic partners.


We’re focusing on the biggest problems faced by society today, combining our investing and operating expertise with our passion for sustainable change. We aim to be a driver of growth through agriculture.

SEI 1 AGRI invests in innovative food and agriculture technology companies across a wide range of sectors and stages around Southern Africa.

As early investors and active board members, we employ a hands-on approach to building companies and are often directly involved in setting company strategy, recruiting key executives and raising additional capital.


Our overriding strategy is to provide growth capital and acquire a minority stake in high growth innovative financial services companies. We assist these companies with hands on involvement, to help build the businesses into assets of value.

FACTURING

SEI 1 MANUFACTURING will make controlling equity investments in manufacturing and industrial companies across a diverse array of industries, including basic materials, branded consumer, healthcare and luxury products, automotive parts, capital equipment and general manufacturing.


The firm leveages over two decades of high long-term capital growth to catalyze the creation of world-class, South African industry-leading companies. South Africa’s economy is highly diversified, with services and manufacturing as the dominant broad sectors.

We generate investment returns by structurally improving the strategic position, competitiveness and profitability of our portfolio companies, rather than primarily relying on financial leverage.


Funding industry 4.0. The decreasing cost of sensors, computing power and networks are leading to a situation where some ideas and products that would not have been imaginable a couple of years ago are now becoming feasible. SEI 1 Manufacturing provides its portfolio companies with the capital necessary to support organic growth initiatives involving capacity expansion, equipment upgrades, r&d and new product development initiatives.

MERIAM KEKANA

Meriam has a solid working experience in accounting and auditing field which spans over 20 years.  She began her career with EY as a trainee accountant where she qualified as a CA(SA) in the Retail and Consumer Products.

She then joined international energy group, BP Southern Africa as Assurance, Risk and Compliance Manager. She has also worked as Chief Financial Officer for Blueprint Group, an advertising and marketing agency. Meriam was previously Audit Committee Chair and Board Member of a listed Energy Company. She is currently an Audit Committee Member of South African Institute of Professional Accountants (SAIPA).

She just completed her Master of Science in Finance and Financial Law with SOAS (University of London).




 

TIRO MOTLOGELOA
Non-Executive Director (Deputy Chairperson)

BCom (Statistics) (University of Pretoria)

Tiro was previously employed at Absa as an economist in the group economic research division. He spent time at Investec Private Bank, followed by a move to Standard Bank, where he joined the card division working as an analyst. Tiro rose through the credit ranks and was instrumental in building a provisioning model for the credit card division, which also included Diners Club. He was also executive assistant to both the chief executive and head of credit for personal markets at Standard Bank. He is an entrepreneur having started various businesses.  

 
 

DR SIHLE SICELO SIBIYA
Non-Executive Director

PhD (IT)-DUT; MSc (Computer Science); BSc Hons (Computer Science); BSc (Computer Science)

Dr Sibiya holds a Doctor of philosophy degree in Information Technology from Durban University of Technology. He also holds a BSc (Honours) and master’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Zululand. He has more than 10 years’ experience, during which time he has held various roles including candidate technologist, engineer, knowledge applicator, database developer, systems developer, ICT manager, chief engineer, business development manager, executive: systems integration and managing director. He has a solid track record with experience in using advanced research, analysis, strategic planning, leadership, conflict management and negotiation skills to successfully develop business initiatives while maximising profit, minimising costs and driving continuous change. Sihle is also an academic, with a number of his academic articles published in the field of Computer Science and Information Technology. He is a founder of a company called Top-Up Solutions Trading and Projects (TUSTP).

 
 

MPHIKELELI SOLOMON TSIE
Non-Executive Director

Solly has experience in investments, including investment management, investment consulting, investment operations and client services. He has worked for large, medium and small financial services firms where he assumed various roles spanning from technical investment to client and business management. He also has experience in providing actuarial services to retirement funds and long-term insurance companies.

 
 

MAZVITA MARADZIKA
Managing Director

Mazvita is a Chartered Accountant (SA) & experienced financial management professional with focus on B-BBEE Advisory, Corporate and Development Finance, Financial Reporting, Fund & Investment Management and Strategy working across multiple industries in Southern Africa. Mazvita is responsible for the development and implementation of SEI 1 Limited's strategy in conjunction with the Board. Prior to joining SEI 1 Limited, Mazvita held numerous roles in the transaction advisory, M&A, Investment holding and professional services space.

 
 

Fuzlin Levy-Hassen
Independent Non-executive Director

Fuzlin Levy-Hassen is a Chartered Accountant who has in excess of 20 years’ experience in venture capital, private equity and development finance, across various industries. She currently provides consulting services through Zasfr Holdings (Pty) Ltd. She was the turnaround Chief Executive Officer of the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA), spent more than 10 years in the New Industries & Venture Capital division at the Industrial Development Corporation and was Head of National Empowerment’s Venture Capital division. She has held directorship and investment committee positions in various companies/funds for more than 10 years and was a Board member and Chairperson of the TIA’s Investment and Finance Committee. She currently is an audit committee member of Bankmed.
